The 'APATANI TRIBE'

Yes, You heard it right !!

We are here with the great 'APATANI TRIBE' of Arunachal Pradesh from Northeast India.

The  Apatani, or Tanw, also known by Apa and Apa Tani, are a tribal group of people living in the Ziro valley in the Lower Subhansiri district of Arunachal Pradesh in India.
Apatani Male
Apatani Female

They are the Non-nomadic tribe residing in , 'Ziro valley',Arunachal Pradesh

UNESCO has proposed the Apatani valley for inclusion as a World Heritage Site for its "extremely high productivity" and "unique" way of preserving the ecology.

Their wet rice cultivation system and their agriculture system are extensive even without
the use of any farm animals or machines. So is their sustainable social forestry system.
They have two major festivals - Dree and Myoko.

In July, the agricultural festival of Dree is celebrated with prayers for a bumper harvest and prosperity of all humankind. Pakhu-ItuDamindaPree dance, etc., are the main cultural programmes performed in the festival.
Myoko is a festival to celebrate friendship similar to modern friendship day but unlike the latter which lasts only for a day, it is celebrated for almost a month long, from the end of March to the end of April. Apatanis trace their descent patrilineally.

The Apatanis evolved an indigenious way of manufacturing a 'Dark salt', high up in the mountains far from any sea was awesome . Maize  or lai(n edible plant), they intake in a slightly raw state and charred to ashes. It is mixed with water, evaporated  & wrapped the residue  in a jungle leaf found near ditches and left to smoke over a fire of wood . The residue is natural homemade salt. As it is rich in Iodine,  the Apatanis are secured from goitre  as well and are mostly quite slim by physique.

The Rice beer prepared by the Apatani Tribe is famous and a tasty one as well.
So don't miss the indigenously prepared Rice beer of Apatanis.
